US delays anti-Russian sanctions over Skripal case to Aug 27

WASHINGTON, Aug 24 (PRIME) -- The U.S. anti-Russian sanctions over Moscow’s alleged involvement in the March poisoning of the Skripal family in the U.K. will come in force on August 27, not on Wednesday as previously expected, a U.S. State Department spokesperson told PRIME late on Thursday.

“The notification… elapsed on August 22. We have submitted the Federal Register Notice enacting the sanctions and expect that it will be published on August 27,” the spokesperson said.

The U.S. announced the new sanctions on August 8, saying that the first package will include a ban on exports of dual-use electronics and component parts to Russia, while the second package will contain more measures, which will be introduced if Russia doesn’t change its policy.

Moscow has repeatedly and categorically denied involvement in the poisoning of the Skripal family, saying that the U.K. hadn’t provided enough proof of that.
